7. Steve Hackett –
The Night Siren
Steve Hackett is on
fire. Since his still-ongoing Genesis Revsited tour has been
enthousiastically embraced by the prog crowd, the guitar wizard,
blessed with youth eternal, can do no wrong. Seriously, the man
doesn't age. What does he drink? Can Phil Collins have some of that?
The latest chapter
in the Hackett Renaissance is called The Night Siren, and sounds
every bit as fresh and spry as the man himself. It's about on the
same level as his other recent solo albums. The songs are shorter
than they were on Wolflight, but still varied and full of those
unexpected twists and turns we've come to expect. There's also a
greater than usual influence of world music, which gives the album a
lovely folky and cinematic touch. “Inca Terra” is a particular highlight, with
its Eastern-European vibe and Spock's Beard vocals. Speaking of
vocals: Hackett still isn't the best singer in the world. Where's Nad
Sylvan?
Other than that, I
have little to say. It's Hackett sounding like Hackett. His albums
are of a consistent qulaity, and if you couldn't care less about
Hackett's solo work, this one isn't going to change your mind. I'm happy with it.
